How ChatGPT supplier search changes the way buyers find makers

In 2025, 6sense data showed that 95% of winning vendors were already on the buyer's Day One shortlist, formed before any seller contact, and that the pre-contact favorite wins 80% of deals. ChatGPT supplier search is where a growing share of that shortlist now takes shape. A buyer opens ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, describes the part, the process or the certification needed, and asks the assistant to compare makers. Buyers complete 70 to 80% of their evaluation before contacting sales, so by the time a quote request reaches a manufacturer, the decision is largely made. The assistant has already read what the market says about the company, and it has already left some names out. For a manufacturer, ChatGPT supplier search works less like a directory listing and more like a first interview the company never gets to attend.

The people asking are changing too. Millennials and Gen Z now account for 71% of B2B buyers, up from 64% in 2022. Those buyers work inside committees. 6sense studied nearly 4,000 B2B buyers with a median deal value of $300,000 to $400,000 and buying committees averaging 10 people, while Omnibound reports committees of 11–14 internal stakeholders on complex purchases. Each person on a committee can put a slightly different question to an assistant.

Forrester reports that almost 95% of buyers anticipate using generative AI to support their decision and purchase process, per its State of Business Buying 2024 research. Todd Hockenberry, who has watched B2B buying behavior shift for 30+ years, calls this the fastest change he has seen.

Geisheker draws the measurement lesson. A team that still counts form fills and MQL volume is measuring the 5% of deals that are not already decided. The wider problem of factories that assistants cannot find is covered in AI visibility for manufacturers.

Seer Interactive found that 87% of more than 500 SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results, and 56% matched Google's, so ChatGPT supplier search tends to start from what Bing already indexes, plus reference sources such as Wikipedia. Perplexity works differently. It leans on review sites and community threads, and it says it runs its own index of more than 200 billion URLs. The picture also moves. Semrush found that ChatGPT's share of Reddit and Wikipedia citations dropped sharply between August and September 2025, and studies of citation sources disagree because they sample different questions. A manufacturer comparing assistants in 2025 should read each citation study as a snapshot, since every study samples its own set of questions. The entries below frame each option by the problem a maker feels when a buyer asks an assistant for suppliers.

Buyers do not stay inside one assistant. Buyers use ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews to define requirements, build a shortlist and compare options before they ever contact sales.

ChatGPT. The pain is a buyer asking for suppliers and getting an answer that leaves your company out. ChatGPT search leans on Bing's index and reference sources such as Wikipedia. It is built to answer the buyer. It does not tell the supplier what it read on the site or why a name was left out.

Perplexity. The pain is that the story told about you sits on sites you do not control. Perplexity leans on review sites and community threads and says it runs its own index of more than 200 billion URLs. It also answers the buyer first, and the supplier gets no report on what was read.

Arbling. The pain is not being able to see any of this. Arbling shows the owner what AI assistants see on the site and what to fix, recognizes every AI visitor, crawler and agent that reaches it and what it does there, and reports the orders and revenue AI referrals bring. When an AI visit lands, Arbling turns it into a quote request or an order. It installs on any website with one line of code.

Distributors face the same two engines, and distributor visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity walks through that case.

What a maker can do before the quote request arrives

Forrester's State of Business Buying 2024 research reports that almost 95% of buyers anticipate using generative AI in their purchase process, so ChatGPT supplier search deserves preparation before the next quote request arrives. In 2025, 6sense reported that the pre-contact favorite wins 80% of deals, which means the real work happens upstream of any sales call. A manufacturer can start with three jobs. The first is plain pages that say what the company makes, for whom, to which standards and at what volumes, written so an assistant can quote a sentence on its own. The second is presence on the reference, review and community sources that ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on. The third is a habit of asking the assistants the questions a buyer would ask and noting which makers are named. A quick version of that check takes about five minutes, and since citation sources shift, it is worth repeating.

Most B2B companies already hold the material AI engines reward, and the work is getting it onto pages an assistant can read. Write the plain answer first and add structured data second, as a label on a page that already explains itself.

Measurement has to change as well. A form fill records the last step of a decision that was shaped earlier, so track which assistants send visitors and what those visitors do. The quick check of about five minutes gives a first read on whether an assistant names your company when a buyer asks.

Finally, make the quote path obvious. A buyer who arrives already validating a shortlist wants to see what information a quote needs and how to send it. For the supplier-side playbook in more detail, see how manufacturers get on the ChatGPT supplier shortlist.

Where Arbling fits. Arbling makes a business readable, trusted and chosen by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, whether it is an online store, a manufacturer or print studio, a wholesale distributor or a software company: it shows the owner what those assistants see and what to fix, recognizes every AI visitor, crawler and agent that reaches the site and what it does there, reports the orders and revenue AI referrals bring, can make a price for an AI visit where the business allows it, always labeled as set by an algorithm, and turns an AI visit into an order, a quote request, a demo or a sign-up. It installs on any website with one line of code and reaches a business without a site through the agent protocols.
